A significant force on the 80s Canadian Rock scene. TORONTO, distinctively fronted by the double edged female team of vocalist Holly Woods and guitarist Sheron Alton, scored an impressive tally of hit singles in their homeland. Following the break up of the band in 1985 Woods and guitarist Brian Allen would land a huge global hit single courtesy of HEART who covered their co-written smash 'What About Love'.
The band had been created in 1979 by the union of former ROSE members guitarist Brian Allen and drummer Jim Fox with singer Annie 'Holly' Woods and CENTAURUS bassist Nick Costello. The final ROSE album 'Judgement Day' had featured Woods as a guest vocalist on the track 'Johnny Law'.
TORONTO's 1980 debut, titled 'Lookin' For Trouble' in Canada but issued in America simply as 'Toronto', produced by the CHILLIWACK duo of Brian Henderson and Brian McLeod, included a cover version of 'You Better Run', for which both KISS drummer PETER CRISS and much more significantly PAT BENATAR issued versions of the very same year. Overall the album made a keen impression on Rock fans with Woods gritty vocal delivery coming in for particular praise.
The sophomore 1981 release 'Head On' was produced by Terry Brown and provided the launch platform the Gold single 'Enough Is Enough'. For their third effort 'Get It On Credit' TORONTO shifted direction into more of an Electronic Pop Rock vein. The album would signal the involvement of another new recruit- ex ROSE bassist and keyboard player Gary Lalonde. |
