Sweet Savage has gained some notoriety over the years for two reasons: one, they are the first band to feature Vivian Campbell (Dio, Def Leppard), and two, they are one of several NWOBHM bands covered by Metallica in their early years -- the song covered, "Killing Time", was released as a single by Sweet Savage back in 1981 and can be found on one or more early Metallica demos.
Fifteen years later, the band finally got around to releasing an album. Amazingly, three of the four original 1981 members (in fact, the entire band, except Campbell) were still in the band -- one wonders what they've been doing all these years. Replacing Campbell is prodigy Simon McBride, only 17 years old at at the time of the recording. With several of the songs written in the band's early career, it should come as no surprise that Sweet Savage isn't exactly a contemporary band, instead preferring to stick to their classic NWOBHM style. Though the band is hardly innovative, it's nice to see them finally releasing an album, and hardened NWOBHM fans should enjoy this band. |
