Traditional Heavy Metal band formed by guitarist Kenny Powell. The band had been created during 1983 by Oklahoma natives guitarists Kenny Powell and Jody Henry along with drummer Steve Wittig. Unable to assemble a full band unit Powell took time out to work with SAVAGE GRACE. This tenure would be short-lived though and, brandishing a cassette of tapes originally scored for SAVAGE GRACE, Powell duly scored a deal with Brian Slagel and Metal Blade Records for OMEN.
The band line up was completed with vocalist J.D. Kimball as OMEN debuted with the ‘Battle Cry’ album. Although blighted by an amatuerish album cover OMEN’s brand of Power Thrash style Metal won many converts world-wide. OMEN also had their track 'Torture Me' featured on the 1984 Metal Blade 'Metal Massacre V' compilation album. A succession of albums ensued but OMEN were unable to extract themselves from a cult following into the mainstream.
The 1988 ‘Nightmares' mini-album contains a live version of the AC/DC classic 'Whole Lotta Rosie'. Kimball departed before this release and OMEN pulled in vocalist Coburn Pharr for the ‘Escape To Nowhere’ album which featured a version of GOLDEN EARRING's 'Radar Love'. Originally the album, produced by the esteemed Paul O’Neill, was to have been entitled ‘Era Of Crisis’ but many of the original tracks slated for the album would be rejected by O’Neill. Despite the tribulations OMEN scored valuable radio play with the track ‘Thorn In Your Flesh’. Upon completion of a ten week run of live shows across America a disillusioned Powell decamped. |
