A note for melodic rock fans: With the possible exception of the genre-spanning 11-minute drum solo "Communication," the tracks would not fit well in a melodic rock context. To repeat: This is *not* a melodic rock album. It's not even a progressive rock album (although it could pass as one in places, especially on "More Coffee"). It is, at its heart, a fusion album; the compositional structure and melodic phrasing are closer to jazz than rock. Taken as such, it's not clearly better than the many other excellent fusion records out there, but it is a strong, creative set of instrumental music, and fans of fusion (or accessible instrumental firepower in any genre, really) will have an easy time enjoying it for what it is. |
