Johnny Kemp began singing in nightclubs in Nassau at the age of 13. He moved to Harlem New York in 1979 and developed his other talents as a dancer, songwriter and actor. In the early 80’s Kemp worked as a session vocalist and songwriter for artists such as Millie Jackson, Glenn Jones, and Change. "Just Another Lover," a song written by Kemp for the group Kashif became a hit in the 1980’s and encouraged Columbia records to sign Kemp.
Kemp’s self-titled debut album Johnny Kemp was released in 1986 to little fanfare. In 1988 Kemp scored a top ten hit with the dance floor anthem “Just got paid” (Friday night) from his sophomore release “Secrets of Flying”. Kemp failed to chart again however the song covered by boy band N’Sync in 2001 remains extremely popular to this day.
Tracks:
1. Just got paid --> KILLERTRACK!!! 2. One thing lead to another 3. My only want is you 4. Dancin with myself 5. Urban times medles a. Inner city b. Mercy mercy me 6. Feeling without touching 7. Just like flyin
Secrets of flying is a classic r&b album... for the so fact that it has the most memorable track on here "just got paid", highlights like "one thing led to another", and "feeling without touching" deserve a listen with his smooth layout on each ballad. This is the best album by Johnny Kemp. |
