The album Grant Stevens is chock full of superb songs that deny any need for hype. They take their strength from the huge fund of Anglo-American rock tradition without sounding old fashioned or borrowed. The emphatically produced songs wear their heart on their sleeve and were composed by Grant Stevens with various collaborators including Markus Winstroer ( Lalo Schifrin´s guitarist of choice ) and the album´s producer Michael Mertens. The latter came to fame in the 1980´s with Propaganda and for the Grant Stevens album hauled co-producer and engineer Stuart Bruce, a friend since their mutual days at Trevor Horn´s Sarm Studios & now at Real World, into the boat. Adding to the international flair with 5 different nations & 3 continents represented is the saxophonist Mel Collins ( The Stones, Clannad, Dire Straits....). The central rôle in the album´s sound, however, is Grant Stevens voice; the smoky nuances as rich and warm as vintage Cognac. |
